“I matriculated from Loreto in 1994, at the height of our country’s democratic transition. In Grade 11 the two classes in my grade were merged to integrate a minority, highly politicised cohort with a majority, racially cohesive one. The mission of rooting out any whiff of racism through cultural assimilation was clear. My highlight was walking hand in hand from school with a multiracial group of friends, chanting “Kyk ons is vry, die nuwe Suid Afrika”. Probably my political awakening.”
